A Ukrainian naval drone has destroyed a Russian helicopter in a historic strike in the Black Sea, according to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine’s post on Telegram. In the strike on December 31, Ukraine utilized the Magura V5 naval drone to fire R-73 SeeDragon missiles and destroyed the Russian Mi-8 helicopter.

Newsweek reached out to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for comment via email.
Why It Matters
Ukraine’s destruction of a Russian helicopter using the Magura V5 naval drone is significant because it is the first time that such a device has taken down an aerial target; this signals a shift in the way the war is being fought. The use of the Magura V5 to hit aerial targets may inspire the development of other drones to be deployed at sea to hit multiple targets.

What To Know
Ukraine’s special soldiers in the GUR unit of the Ministry of Defense destroyed the Russian helicopter by firing R-73 SeeDragon missiles during the battle in the Black Sea near Cape Tarkhankut in occupied Crimea. Ukraine also hit another Russian helicopter, but it was able to reach its base airfield.
The Magura V5 naval drone is an advanced unmanned surface vehicle (USV) that is meant for multi-role missions such as reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and precision strikes, according to the outlet Global Defense News. Developed by the GUR, a Ukrainian military intelligence agency, the drone is often used to launch strikes against Russian assets in Crimea and has hit numerous Russian vessels in the Black Sea.
The drone can be used for long-range missions, as it has a top speed of 78 kilometers per hour (42 knots) and an operational range of up to 800 kilometers [497 miles], and 200-kilogram [440-pound] explosive payload. Due to its speed and rapid maneuverability, it is difficult for opposing naval forces to intercept.
The naval drone is equipped with autonomous navigation systems that are powered by artificial intelligence and can conduct precision maneuvers, target engagement, and integrate various payloads. The R-73 SeeDragon missiles fired from the Magura V5 naval drone were originally developed as short-range, air-to-air missiles with infrared homing capabilities. The missile has since been repurposed to hit aerial targets.
This has not been Ukraine’s only victory using the Magura V5 naval drone in Crimea recently, as Kyiv also made history using the drone to sink a Russian warship in an active combat zone earlier this week. The kamikaze naval drone managed to destroy or damage 15 Russian naval vessels.
Ukraine has launched increased strikes in Crimea since the war began in 2022, although it has been fighting with Russia over the territory since 2014, when it was annexed by Moscow.

What Happens Next
It remains to be seen whether Ukraine continues to deploy the Magura V5 naval drone and what others are developed to combat aerial targets while fighting at sea.
