Secret Level Pitched a Halo/Doom Crossover Episode But Got Rejected

“Man, you think that we didn’t talk to Halo or something?” says Secret Level creator Tim Miller. The man behind Prime Video’s video game anthology series, together with executive producer Dave Wilson, is speaking on the rejection of a pitch he made for an ambitious Master Chief/Doom Slayer crossover episode, one that would bring together two of the most iconic video games of all time in Halo and Doom. “The creative director at [Doom developer] id is a good friend of ours, and so are folks at Microsoft,” Wilson tells Collider. “So we made a big plea because one of the things both Tim and I would love to do is do something that isn’t currently available in the games, like crossovers. We wanted to make a Master Chief/Doom Slayer crossover episode, and I spent a whole weekend crafting this impassioned letter of my childhood. And it’s exactly what Tim said; they were like, ‘Nah.'” One of the Secret Level episodes takes place in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The series has been renewed for a second season. Amazon Prime Video The creators of the animated Netflix anthology Love, Death & Robots applied their talents (along with over 2,000 animators) at Prime Video for Secret Level. It follows the same anthology format, with bite-sized episodes unrelated to each other, and centers it on beloved video games. Each episode tells an original story inside a different video game universe, be it Warhammer 40,000, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Armored Core, or Dungeons and Dragons. The voice cast includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Hart, Temuera Morrison, and Ariana Greenblatt. Miller and Wilson are happy with the video games they managed to get, but will always think about the ones that got away. “There were some IPs that we approached that were having a real big moment at that time and Hollywood had come a calling,” says Wilson, “and three years later, nothing’s happened. We were going to make an episode for them, and it was going to be awesome, but Hollywood happens.” Miller says he “gets a little chafed when I read online, and they’re like, “Hold on, these a**holes took Spelunky when they could have taken Halo?” There’s still a chance for Miller and Wilson to take Halo, however. Secret Level launched its first batch of episodes on 10 December, 2024 on Prime Video. Days after its second and final batch released on 17 December, Prime Video renewed it for a second season. There’s no release date yet, but given the success of Secret Level, it might just open a few secret doors.
