NASCAR’s Chief Operating Officer, Steve O’Donnell, has discussed potential changes to the NASCAR playoff format.
As the 2024 season wrapped up, concerns emerged about the fairness of the playoff structure, especially after Joey Logano’s championship win. Despite having an average regular season, Logano capitalized on the current format to win his third championship. This faced some backlash, considering that drivers like Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, and the regular season champion Tyler Reddick performed more consistently throughout the year.
The NASCAR playoff format has been a hot topic since it was introduced in 2004. Over the years, although it has seen several adjustments, criticisms about fairness persist.
Out of the 21 seasons since the playoffs began, only eight champions have also scored the most points through the entire 36-race season. This discrepancy became more apparent when Logano clinched the 2024 title, even though other drivers demonstrated steadier performances.

Critics argue that the playoff format places too much emphasis on winning rather than overall consistency. Media outlets and broadcasters also echo these sentiments, noting discrepancies between regular season standings and playoff outcomes.
In light of these challenges, NASCAR is actively exploring potential changes to its playoff system, as confirmed by COO Steve O’Donnell during an interview with the Sports Business Journal. He explained:
“What I would say is that we’ll have an industry working group that will take a look and is already taking a look at the playoffs. The great thing about our system is that this evolved through discussions with the industry- everyone had an input into the product and the format that you see today and that will continue.
“We’ll look at different ideas, and if we can make tweaks to enhance it we certainly will do that, but we’re not going to do it unless we feel like it’s in the best interest of the sport and really drives even more engagement from our fans.”

Despite these discussions, there’s no guarantee that changes will be made. O’Donnell and NASCAR acknowledge the importance of ensuring any modifications are in the sport’s best interest.
