Hollywood A-listers Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finalized their divorce settlement after eight years of negotiations.
Why It Matters
Jolie and Pitt were one of the most high profile couples in the entertainment industry and were dubbed “Brangelina” during their time together.
Their separation and subsequent divorce proceedings became messy over how to split their assets. Jolie also accused Pitt of abuse against her and their six children. At the time of their divorce, a large part of their estate was said to be worth $164 million, and further details about their finances haven’t been disclosed.
What to Know
The Oscar winners were first linked after starring together in the 2005 movie Mr and Mrs Smith, and they got married in 2014.
Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences, and some of their children have even filed to remove Pitt from their names.

What People Are Saying
In a new update, Jolie’s lawyer confirmed their divorce has finally been resolved after eight years. The matter must now be presented to a judge to sign off on the agreement.
Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, said in a statement to People magazine that the actress had been focused on “finding peace and healing for their family” since her split from the actor.
“This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
Newsweek contacted Jolie and Pitt’s representatives by email on Monday for comment.
There were many sticking points in the couple’s divorce negotiations, including custody over their children. They finally reached a custody agreement in 2021.
Another tricky battle was over the couple’s French property, Chateâu Miraval, which they bought in 2008. It played host to their wedding six years later.
The property also serves as a winery and Pitt’s lawyers accused Jolie of going back on a prior agreement that she would sell him her 50 percent of the winery. Jolie sold her 50 percent share to the company Tenute del Mondo, which is a subsidiary of Russian mogul Yuri Shefler’s SPI Group, in 2021.
A lawsuit filed by Pitt argued that he worked to turn the winery “into a multimillion-dollar global business and one of the world’s most highly regarded producers of rosé wine,” and alleged that Jolie contributed “nothing to Miraval’s success.”
It also slammed Shefler’s ties to the brand because of the ongoing war in Ukraine and Russian President Vladmir Putin’s “gay propaganda” laws, which prevent the positive representation of LGBTQ+ topics in the country.
The lawsuit argued that Shefler’s connection “poses a threat to the existence of the business, as Shefler’s Russian-linked alcohol conglomerate has been repeatedly the target of boycotts in connection with Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and homophobic legislation.”
