Netflix has unveiled the debut poster for Squid Game season 3, which includes a surprise reveal: the show’s release date. The reaction was mixed.
It’s confirmed to be the third and final season of Squid Game, ending the arc of Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-jae) after he enters a murderous game show in which contestants can win a large sum of money – or die in the process.
‘Coming 2025, only on Netflix,’ reads the poster, meaning there’s less than a year to wait until our next entry into the dark South Korean game show drama. That’s a lightning fast turnaround given the three-year gap between the first and second seasons.
Squid Game season 2 casts Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-jae) back into the murderous contest. Joining him is the Front Man, who pretends to be a contestant himself.

The announcement received some backlash on social media, with Twitter users saying they need more time to digest the current season.

Squid Game season 1 launched September 17, 2021 on Netflix, with its follow-up releasing December 26, 2024. So, why is Squid Game season 3 releasing so soon? It’s because both seasons were shot back-to-back, meaning there’s no more shooting to be done. Now it’s a case of editing all the footage together in post-production.
There’s even a rumor potentially answering the question ‘when will Squid Game release?’ This is based off the official YouTube account for Korea’s Netflix, which included the date June 27, 2025 in its description. This description has now been edited to remove the date, leading many to believe this date was added as a mistake. Either that, or it’s marketing to drum up more excitement.
In Squid Game season 2, we once again follow Seong Gi-Hun as seeks revenge on the Squid Game organisers. After attempting to track down The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), he finds himself unwittingly cast back into the contest. With the games he previously played now replaced by a devious new set, his aim is to save as many people as he can.
With season 2 ending on somewhat of a cliffhanger, we’ll continue Seong’s story. He probably won’t enter the Squid Game again, however. To avoid repetition and give audiences something fresh, it’s possible he’ll pick up where he left off before he wound up in the game show for a second time: rounding up an army of special forces operatives and taking the fight to the shadowy organization who caused thousands of people so much misery.
The reviews for Squid Game season 2 have been mixed. The show’s seven episodes garnered 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, with just 64% for its audience score. That’s well below the previous season’s 95% and 83% respectively.
