Hearts have melted over a dog anxiously checking in on her owner’s mother after she slept in longer than usual.
Jennifer Lee is the proud owner of rescue dog Maggie, a Staffordshire terrier and pit bull mix who has developed a strong bond with Lee’s mother, Gigi—after the dog “worked hard to win her over.”
“My mom has always been a bit afraid of dogs but particularly of bully breeds,” Lee told Newsweek, saying the breed has an unfair reputation, and at first her mother didn’t want Lee to adopt Maggie at all.
“My mom was so scared she would lock herself in the bedroom and would only let Maggie be in the house while on leash attached to me,” she said. “But over time she started seeing how sweet Maggie is.”
Gigi so began to trust Maggie that, after experiencing a break-in in 2022, she asked her daughter and her dog to come and live with her—in part, “because she thought Maggie would make her feel safe again.
“That’s when they got really close.”
An example of their bond has now been shown off in a viral TikTok video on Lee’s TikTok account, @maggiepotamus_. Posted on December 27 and boasting 41,000 likes, it shows Maggie standing at a closed door begging to be let inside, as Lee assures her: “She’s just sleeping!”
Maggie the pit bull cross has a special relationship with her ‘Gigi’, her owner’s mother. A video of the dog crying outside Gigi’s door has proved popular online.

She wrote across the video: “My dog got worried when Gigi slept in because she’s usually awake by now so she sat outside her door crying until I let her go check that Gigi was ok.”
In the clip, Maggie walks eagerly into the darkened room and whines repeatedly—as Gigi sits up in bed and reassures her that she’s all right.
The video then switches to Maggie in the bed with Gigi, looking much more happy and relaxed, and Gigi gives her gentle cuddles, with the words: “Just a Bubbe and the dog she was afraid of and didn’t want me to adopt.”
Lee explained: “Maggie keeps track of all her humans so when Gigi slept in late on vacation, Maggie started crying at her door and trying to get me to check on her.
“Eventually I actually got a little paranoid that she knew something I didn’t so I let her go check.”
She added: “Of course Gigi was fine, and Maggie calmed down as soon as she got cuddles from her Gigi.”
Gigi relaxed as soon as she got “cuddles” from her Gigi. Lee’s mother had been afraid of Maggie at first, but the pair are now inseparable.

TikTok users loved the sweet video, with one sharing their own dog’s story: “His people had to be where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be there. Would get upset until all was right with the world.”
“Mine does this with the kids because it’s her job to wake them up on school days,” another wrote, while one said: “My dog is OUTRAGED when papa dares to sleep too late. He files a complaint with upper management (aka Grandma).”
And one shared: “My mom is very scared of dogs but my mastiff mix is her favorite grandson now!”
According to Wag!, someone with a fear of dogs can help overcome it by being around dogs, learning to read body language and being aware of your own body language, and taking part in relaxation techniques. If their fear of dogs is extreme, they may consider getting professional help to overcome it.
Lee told Newsweek: “Maggie has always adored her Gigi but now Gigi loves Maggie too. It’s very cute.”
