Kenny Wallace’s brother, Mike Wallace, has opened up on the emotional reason for his attempt at the 2025 Daytona 500.
He is participating in this legendary race as a tribute to his late wife, Carla, who passed away from cancer in 2024 after 44 years of marriage.
As part of the Wallace family, which boasts a strong legacy in NASCAR, Mike is channeling his personal loss into motivation for his racing career. Though less celebrated than his brothers, Rusty and Kenny, Mike continues to make his mark in the sport, now by returning to the Cup series at the age of 65 with MBM Motorsports.
The Wallace family has a storied history in NASCAR, starting with Russell “Russ” William Wallace, Sr. Russ was a successful driver with numerous wins in the Midwest during the 1960s and 1970s.

His sons followed his footsteps, with Rusty Wallace gaining fame as a 1989 Winston Cup Champion. Rusty is also in the NASCAR Hall of Fame and holds a record for short-track victories.
Meanwhile, Kenny Wallace has shifted to being a NASCAR media figure after his racing career. In 2011, the Wallace family became the first in NASCAR history to have four members race in the Daytona 500.
Mike, whose career began in 1991, has seen him compete in various NASCAR series, including the Xfinity and Truck Series, securing several Daytona wins. His last Cup Series race was in 2015, but he’s competed in the Xfinity Series as recently as 2020.
Now, Mike is coming back to the Daytona 500 in 2025 with MBM Motorsports. The team showed solid performance last season, and with a strong engine, Mike hopes to be competitive against the younger field. If Mike qualifies, this race would mark his participation in four different racing decades.
The reason for Mike’s endeavor lies in honoring Carla’s memory. Whilst speaking to his brother, Kenny, Mike explained:
“The big reason is in January 2024 I lost my wife Carla from being married 44 years. She had a bout with cancer, we thought she had beat it, unfortunately, she didn’t and life wasn’t all that great, wasn’t that fun in 2024…
“2025 brings fresh excitement, starting with this Daytona 500 announcement. They say you have to be in it to win it, and we are rolling into Daytona.”

This racing venture is also a source of rejuvenation for Mike and his family. 2024 was challenging for them, and this opportunity provides them with a chance to find a positive focus. He added:
“Myself and my kids, we all needed a boost. We need something that would say, ‘Here’s a positive story for us, let’s go make it happen’ and this opportunity presented itself.”
With the Wallace family actively supporting him, his attempt is generating considerable attention. At 65, Mike’s attempt at Daytona brings him close to Mark Thompson’s record as the oldest driver to participate, held since 2018 when Thompson raced at 66.
