A 20-year-old man was arrested early New Year’s Day after breaking into Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and stealing a Christmas ornament, authorities reported.
Why It Matters
The announcement of the arrest comes shortly after Adams said he was ordering the New York Police Department (NYPD) to increase their presence following a terrorist attack in New Orleans and a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside a Las Vegas hotel owned by President-elect Donald Trump.
The Las Vegas incident killed one person and injured seven others. Meanwhile, the New Orleans incident killed 15 people, including the assailant, and injured about 30 more. Both incidents are being investigated as possible terror attacks.
What To Know
The suspect in the New York break-in scaled a fence and entered the grounds of Gracie Mansion, a historic residence located within a park on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, shortly before 4:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, according to police. Minutes later, he was discovered in a second-floor bathroom.
At a local police precinct, the suspect showed detectives a video of himself taking a Christmas ornament from a drawer inside the residence, according to a criminal complaint. He later handed over the ornament along with several other unspecified items, authorities said.
A spokesperson for Adams confirmed that he was not at Gracie Mansion during the early-morning incident.

Queens Shooting
Another Wednesday incident in New York City that has garnered nationwide attention is a mass shooting at a nightclub.
At least 10 people received non-life-threatening injuries following an incident at the Amazura event hall in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens.
The shooting took place at around 11:18 p.m. ET on Wednesday night. Police confirmed the incident is not being treated as a terrorist incident.
Four males reportedly approached the venue and opened fire over 30 times in the direction of a group standing outside the event space, striking multiple victims. The suspects then fled, and no arrests have been made as of press time.
Six females and four males were taken to area hospitals. All of the victims are expected to recover from their non-life-threatening injuries.
What People Are Saying
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Adams said: “An evening of celebration ended with senseless violence overnight at a venue in Queens. I want to be clear this incident has no connection to the terrorism investigations elsewhere in our country.”
He added, “As we have said, there is no room for this criminal behavior in our city and we are determined to bring these dangerous individuals to justice and get illegal guns off our streets. My prayers are with the victims and their families.”
Adams has yet to comment publicly on the break-in at Gracie Mansion.
