The Philadelphia Phillies were one of the best teams in the league in 2024, but they fell flat on their faces when the postseason came around. Luckily for the Phillies, they only have two free agents, Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez, this winter.
The Phillies need to add relievers to their bullpen, so their only two free agents being relief pitchers is quite concerning. As of now, Philadelphia doesn’t have a shutdown closer, though it has a few quality backend arms. Still, relief pitching should be a priority for the Phillies.
R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports recently predicted the Phillies would re-sign 2024 All-Star reliever Jeff Hoffman this winter. Hoffman is projected to sign for $36 million, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

“The top of the relief market has yet to thaw out,” Anderson wrote. “It doesn’t help that some teams have approached Hoffman with the intent of starting him, making this a little less straightforward of a situation than it appeared back in November. I’ll take the coward’s way out and predict that the Phillies retain him — as a reliever.”
Hoffman was excellent for the Phillies in both seasons with the team. He posted ERAs of 2.41 and 2.17 in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Despite being worth a whopping 0.0 WAR through seven big league seasons, Hoffman has been worth 3.9 WAR in his two years in Philadelphia.
It would make sense for the Phillies to bring him back, but can they get the job done?
