First baseman Pete Alonso’s free agency experience probably isn’t going how he initially hoped it would. With several teams opting for other solutions, the New York Mets are seen as the “most obvious fit” for the right-handed slugger.
President of baseball operations David Stearns is aware of the situation. It seems like he’s being careful at the negotiating table with Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras. The Mets have reportedly offered their homegrown star a three-year, $90 million deal with multiple opt-outs.
Playing hardball in negotiations doesn’t mean the club doesn’t want to retain the Polar Bear, though. Stearns and team owner Steve Cohen have publicly stated they’d like Alonso to remain in Queens. After reportedly rejecting a seven-year, $158 million extension in June 2023, is there a middle ground where the Mets and Alonso can meet?

FOX Sports’ Deesha Thosar ultimately thinks that will happen while discussing some of baseball’s hottest offseason topics.
“I have always expected Alonso to end back up with the Mets, and I’m not changing my answer now,” Thosar wrote. “The Mets know firsthand how pivotal Alonso’s role was in their 2024 playoff run — and even though he had a substandard regular season, his ninth-inning go-ahead home run off Devin Williams in the wild-card series propelled his club all the way to the NLCS.
“Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns can try his best to take sentimentality out of the equation, but I think the emotional tie to Alonso might just push Steve Cohen to get the deal done somewhere around $130 million for five years.”
Based on Spotrac’s market-value estimate of six years and $174 million, this prediction from Thosar would be quite a discount for New York. Alonso remaining with the Mets does make the most sense, and he would provide excellent protection for newly acquired outfielder Juan Soto in the lineup.
