Padres Could Make Splash For Four-Time All-Star As Stalemate Continues

The New York Mets are less likely to re-sign Pete Alonso with each day that passes and an agreement isn’t reached. Alonso and the Mets are still a considerable distance apart with their offers. With Jurickson Profar and Ha-Seong Kim hitting free agency, the Padres could opt to spend big money on a first baseman rather than outfielder or infielder. Alonso to the Padres is certainly feasible as the team has yet to sign a free agent to a Major League contract this offseason. Preller is looking to retool the lineup after falling just short in the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Signing Alonso, who averages 3.3 WAR per season, would bring the Padres one step closer to the king of the National League West. Very few teams have the opportunity to give Alonso the kind of contract he wants, but the Padres are one of them.
