Morgan Wallen treated his fans to a New Year’s Eve surprise by releasing a new song.
The country music superstar put out the track “Smile” and an accompanying music video in the early hours of Tuesday.
Why It Matters
Wallen is one of the biggest musicians in the U.S. at the moment and his song “Last Night” topped the 2023 music charts.
He has also been plagued by headlines regarding his arrest in Nashville in April for throwing a chair off a balcony at a bar. Wallen was sentenced this month to a two-year suspended sentence for his actions after pleading guilty to all counts against him.
The singer has been at the center of many controversies over the years, most recently in July during a performance in Denver, Colorado. While performing his song “Cowgirls,” a fan threw their cell phone onto the stage, and it hit Wallen on the shoulder. Fan footage of the incident, published by TMZ, showed him visibly frustrated as he tossed the phone off the stage.

What to Know
The song “Smile” was released to Wallen’s social media accounts with a simple caption telling fans it was “out now.”
It’s a slow love song and continues the theme of introspection in his other songs, such as “Lies Lies Lies” and “Love Somebody.”
According to Wallen’s record label, “Smile” sees the narrator navigating life’s little moments and longings,” and “depicts a relationship as we see them today through filtered snapshots,” per Just Jared.
The video was made in a short film format directed by Justin Clough. It starts with Wallen backstage at a fictional late night talk show on New Year’s Eve. Before walking out onto the stage he looks sadly back at a woman sitting in his dressing room.
The host announces that Wallen will be performing “Love Somebody,” but before he begins singing the musician turns to his band and they start playing “Smile,” to the shock of the producers.
When Wallen returns to his dressing room, the woman has gone and he drops sullenly into his chair.
