He was shown on the sideline in considerable pain and attempted to work out the affected arm. Purdy still had his helmet on and was attempting to throw the ball, but he was grimacing while doing so. Instead of risking further injury, the 49ers had Josh Dobbs go in for the injured Purdy. Dobbs finished out the game, and Purdy spoke about his injury following the loss to the Lions. He stated that his arm “doesn’t feel the best,” and added it felt like his “arm was on fire.” Shanahan stated that more tests would be done on Purdy’s arm, which has now come back with some good news for the quarterback. He is likely just needing rest, which will come following the final game in Week 18. Purdy is due a sizeable contract extension, and it would make sense that the 49ers would sit their franchise quarterback instead of playing him in a game that does not matter. Despite Purdy likely wanting to finish out the season, the elbow injury sounds significant enough that Shanahan has all but ruled him out already. For more on the 49ers, head to Newsweek Sports.
